This open and closed syllable sort gives your fourth graders practice with separating words into syllables. An open syllable has the vowel at the end of the syllable and makes the long vowel sound, such as robot and tiger. A closed syllable has the short vowel sound and the syllable ends with a consonant, such as basket and rabbit. Generalization: The syllable break in words with the VCCV spelling pattern occurs between the two and double consonants (sur-vive, ap-pear). In words with the VCV spelling pattern, a consonant between two vowels tends to go with the second vowel unless the first vowel is accented and short (open syllable: bro-ken; closed syllable: wag-on). VCCV. This syllable is referred as ‘closed’ as the consonant follows up the vowel, comes in the end of word, and makes it relatively a shorter sound as compare to the open syllables. On the other hand, vowels in the closed syllable did not sound similar to the name of the letter. They are written in three ways: Open compound words: These are spelled as two separate words. Closed compound words: These are joined together to form one word. Hyphenated compounds: These are two or more words connected by a hyphen.
